General Cytopathology

Patho-Lab Diagnostics has an extensive experience in Liquid-based Cytology for Gynecological and non-Gynecological specimen.

The Gynecological Cytology is described in the next section.

General cytology of any body fluid such us saliva, BAL and effusions may be assessed by us for atypical cells and other findings.

We also assess Fine Needle Aspirations (FNA) and Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsies (FNAB).

Liquid-base cytology is done on daily basis for Sputum cytology, Gastrointestinal brushing, Urine cytology, Impression smear, Scrapings cytology - skin, eye etc.

In addition to the above listed items, Patho-Lab's activities include immunohistochemically procedures with a large battery of antibodies to cellular components and specific tumor markers, as well as the use of auxiliary new diagnostic techniques.

Immunohistochemistry procedures are done according the necessities to all specimen sources such as:

Solid Tumors, Soft Tissue Tumors, Metastatic Tumors, Neoplastic Cells of Ascitic & Pleural Effusions, Lymphoma

Neuroendocrine Tumors, Undifferentiated Neoplasms.

Cytological evaluation (as well as all other services) is available for specimens of human origin as well as of veterinary origin.

Collection of specimens from clients follows the same method as with other pathologic specimens. (See under Histopathology)

Skilled technicians and screeners and strict quality control supervision ensures fast and reliable diagnosis.

The cytology program at Patho-Lab Diagnostics is patient focused and service driven to provide the highest quality service to the clinician.

We are also involved in in-house studies to assess the value of some of the newer technologies, such as molecular testing, to our clients and their patients.

Gynecological Cytopathology

We accept all gynecological-related specimens such as cervical and endometrial specimen.

Real-time correlations between a patient's prior abnormal Pap smear read at Patho-Lab Diagnostics and her current cervical biopsy aids our clients in providing quality care for their patients.

Advances in technology are changing the way in which cytopathology and Pap smear screening are practiced. At Patho-Lab Diagnostics, we closely monitor new developments in technology. We focus our attention on the products and services that improve quality and bring value to our clients and patients.

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. The Papanicolaou (Pap) smear test has been used to screen for pre-cancerous lesions in asymptomatic women for the past 50 years.

Patho-Lab Diagnostics offers the Thin-Prep liquid-based cytology service. This is especially valuable for gynecological samples, as other ancillary investigations, such as HPV sub-typing and Chlamydia / Gonorrhoea tests, may be performed on the same samples. The latter may be performed retrospectively.

  • Cervical cancer screening - a test that evaluates cells taken from the cervix for signs of cervical cancer.
  • The Pap test - the generic term for the type of test developed by Dr. George Papanicolaou, used to screen for signs of cervical cancer.
  • The Pap (or cervical) smear - the conventional method for Pap testing that involves smearing a portion of a woman's cervical cell sample onto a glass slide.
  • The liquid based ThinPrep Pap Test - Hailed as a revolutionary development in cervical cancer screening, clinical studies have proven that the ThinPrep Pap Test is far more effective in the early detection of precancerous cells. It involves a different process whereby virtually all of the cervical cell sample is rinsed into a vial, hence the same samples can then be re-used to screen for HPV, Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea etc.

Since the symptoms of cervical cancer are not always obvious, the best way to protect yourself is to undergo regular Pap tests, preferably a liquid based ThinPrep Pap Test due to its greater sensitivity, accuracy and HPV typing by using the unique DIGENE DNA based assay.
